Analysis (cont.)
Civil Rights

(n.) the rights of all citizens, regardless of race, religion, sex, etc. to vote, to enjoy life, liberty, property and equal protection under the law.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an extremely influential leader in the civil rights movement, insisted that his followers limit their actions to civil disobedience, or nonviolent protests against unjust laws. He said “We must use weapons of love. We must have compassion and understanding for those who hate us.”

The use of nonviolent protest has been used to bring about social change in the United States throughout history. Nonviolent protests led to the passing of civil rights laws, such as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which protects the rights of all citizens to vote and outlawed discrimination in hiring and ended segregation in public places.

Why do you think that the use of non-violent protest is effective in bringing about change? (Please be detailed in your answer using a minimum of 5 sentences.)
