Report an Absence

Parent must phone the Attendance Line at 847-486-7712 by 8:30am if their student will be arriving to school after 8:15 to report them tardy.

Leave a message including the following:

• Speak slowly 
• Say and spell the student’s first and last name
• Grade and team
• Reason for the late arrival
• Expected time of arrival

Parents do not need to accompany students inside.  Students enter through the main office, sign themselves in and are issued a pass to class.

A student’s tardy to school is regarded as “excused” if a medical appointment or a family emergency was the cause of the late arrival. Students who are late for other reasons that are otherwise within their control (such as oversleeping or leaving the house too late) are regarded as “unexcused". We will help students monitor their tardies to school to help them cultivate good time management habits. And since students arriving late to school require special office attention and whose late arrival to class can disrupt the flow of classroom activities, there is a trimester limit (5) to the number unexcused tardies.  Students who exceed the trimester limit of unexcused tardies will need to meet with one of the principals and may be issued a minor consequence.
 

Early Dismissal

• Parent must phone the Attendance Line at 847-486-7712 by 8:30am if their student will need to leave school before the end of the school day at 3:10pm.  

• Leave a message including the following:

  • Speak slowly

  • Say and spell the student’s first and last name

  • Grade and team

  • Reason for the early dismissal.

  • Time of pick up at school

  • Report if the student will be returning to school that day.  If so, what time will they return.

• If student is leaving before 10am, do not leave a message. Call the main office and press #2.

• Students are not permitted to leave class without a pass. Students are required to have a pass even if they will be leaving during passing period or lunch.

• Students will be emailed an Early Dismissal Pass which will show up as a notification on their iPad.(Students may bring a parent note to the Main Office upon arrival at school. A staff member will issue a paper Early Dismissal Pass.)

• Students should present the Early Dismissal Pass to their teacher. This permits them to come to the office at the appointed time.  If they are leaving during passing period, students should inform their next teacher so their whereabouts will be known.

• A parent or authorized adult must come into the office to sign out the student. Children are not permitted to wait outside nor to walk home or to appointments.

• On rare occasions, when a student needs to leave early unexpectedly during the school day, parents must call the main office at 847-486-7700, press #2 to speak to a staff member.  

• As a matter of course, office staff does not call into rooms to give a student a message.

• Adhering to this policy allows for a quicker exit from the building as students are waiting in the office and minimizes the amount of interruptions to classes.

If your child will be out of school for an extended period of time, please notify the Health Office (847-486-7716) in advance of the absence.  The Health Coordinator will ensure that the student's teachers are also aware of the absence.

Please advise the  School Nurse in writing if you are planning to be away for any extended period of time while your child remains in school.  The Nurse should know the name and telephone numbers of the person(s) who will be responsible for your child in your absence.

A student must be absent for at least 2 days before requesting homework.  Students should utilize the team websites, contact a “homework buddy,” or use the other methods teachers have identified to access homework information to find out about missed assignments for an absence of only 1 day. Upon returning to school, the student should check in with his/her teachers.

Homework requests for 2 day absences should be submitted directly to the teacher(s) by 10:00 a.m. on the day it will be picked up.  Teachers will determine appropriate due dates for these assignments, and will offer students an opportunity to seek extra help before and after school when they return.  The homework may be picked up from the Main Office between 3:15 and 4:30 p.m. Please note: Parents should call the Main Office to see if any paperwork has been brought down for pick up as many teachers will send assignments to students through their IPad.

For a week or more absence: a request must be submitted at least a week before the homework is needed.  Parents should be aware that not all schoolwork may be made up independently; students may need to meet with teachers before or after school for additional “catch-up,” to take missed tests/quizzes, or to do project work.

For any long-term absence due to illness (at least 10 days), homebound instruction may be arranged through the Student Services Administrator.
